From Wim Remes, his first encounter with Howard Schmidt:

While I always was aware of the unmeasurable impact Howard had affected on our industry and community, I only met him in person at an event in Manila in 2013. As it goes we gathered for a formal dinner with industry and government representation. I was present in my capacity as an ISC2 board member and while I was catching up with some people, this guy walked in dressed in jeans and with a Harley Davidson t-shirt on. Not something you'd immediately expect at a formal dinner but it showed me at first glance who Howard is. It was confirmed over and over again that working with Howard challenged me as a person, intellectually, and professionally but no matter what the circumstances are, you always get the real Howard. Unfiltered, and 100% focused on the big picture : making our world more secure while being his genuine, brilliant, and awesome self.

From Scott Charney:

Howard and I first met when he was director of the Air Force’s Computer Forensics lab.  We have remained close friends and collaborators for almost a quarter of a century and four things come to mind whenever I think of Howard:  trailblazing, passion, sharing, and frequent flier miles!  He has been a trailblazer:  he was at the forefront of cyber forensics, he was at the forefront of computer security, and he was the first White House cyber czar.  He has passion, determined to protect the Internet and all of its users.  He willingly shares his knowledge, expertise, and experience with anyone who wants to learn or help.  And this, of course, led to frequent flyer miles!  But what those miles truly represent is the building of local and international relationships that have been critical to the world’s forward progress.  Howard has been a leader, and I, like others, will forever be thankful for his leadership.

From notes on his induction into the Cyber Security Hall of Fame, 2019: https://www.cerias.purdue.edu/site/blog/post/cyber_security_hall_of_fame_2019_inductees/

"Howard Schmidt , who, among many other activities, was Vice Chair of the President's Critical Infrastructure Protection Board and the special adviser for cyberspace security for the Bush White House directly following 9/11.
